The answer that arrived in the lift
The perfect response turned up four minutes after the meeting ended. In the meeting, someone else’s weaker answer had already won.
The answer that arrived two turns late
The answer was ready in your first language. By the time it arrived in English, the conversation had moved two turns on.
What may be happening in the moment
Answering in a second language can take more effort. In calm conditions that effort is invisible. When the question is unexpected, it can produce a silence, and a silence in a meeting reads as not knowing. The engineer knew. The room never found out.
Speed here is not about talking fast. It is about how quickly a usable first sentence arrives, because the first sentence buys the time for everything after it. That is trainable, and it often responds early once it is measured.
How it is scored

Scoring separates a thinking pause from a lost thread. A short pause before a strong answer is not a fault.
